How to get the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 to Work in Windows 11

Introduction

I have had my Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 since, probably, 2009.  It does two-sided black-and-white or color scans with amazing speed.  It requires a bit of dusting sometimes, but has otherwise never given me any trouble.

After upgrading to Windows 11, I noticed that my scanner no longer worked.  It still works on my old Win 10 laptop, but not under Windows 11.  Sure enough–The Fujitsu ScanSnap Website confirms, in its laconic fashion, that the software that runs the ScanSnap S1500 is not compatible with Windows 11; No plans to upgrade their drivers at Fujitsu.  Their only recommendation– Get a brand new Fujitsu ScanSnap iX 1600 Versatile Cloud Enabled Document Scanner for Mac or PC, for only $599.95!

I am sure I would enjoy a new iX 1600, and since it is being sold for the price of 2 gallons of gas, why not?  But I thought I would try to get Win 11 to run the old scanner anyway.

Finding the Programs

The ScanSnap Manager program seems to have several EXE’s with cryptic, though logical, names.  In my Windows 11 Home version, these are located in the following directory:

C:\Program Files (x86)\PFU\ScanSnap\Driver\

Here are the program files I upgraded:

PfuSsMFThumbnail.exe

PfuSsMon.exe

PfuSsOcr.exe

PfuSsQuickMenu.exe

PfuSsQuickMenuManager.exe

Changing Compatibility Mode Settings

If you can find the program files, it is possible to tell Windows 11 to run them in a compatibility mode for an earlier version of Windows.  I did the following procedure for all of the above files.  Could be that you don’t really need to do all of them, but I don’t have the patience to undo compatibility one at a time until the scanner doesn’t work–

Procedure:

Highlight Program

Right-click Program name

Left-click Show More Options

Left-click Troubleshoot Compatibility

Program says “Detecting Issues” and gives two selections;

Left-click Selection 2, [Manually] Troubleshoot Program.

(Auto gives you Vista compatibility.)

Left-click Selection 1, This program worked in Earlier versions of Windows

Left-click [Next] button

Left-click Selection 1 Windows 8 Compatibility

(or Windows 10 if that gets on the list someday)

Left-click [Next]

Left-click [Test the Program]

The program may or may not seem to work.  Whether it seems to work or not–

Left-click [Next]

Left-click [Yes] to save these settings.

Left-click [Close]

Do this for all the EXE files listed above, then try scanning something with your Fujitsu ScanSnap 1500.

Hopefully, your ScanSnap 1500 will start working again!

Installing HR Block Tax Software in Ubuntu Linux using Codeweavers Crossover

Running HR Block 2017 Tax Software in Ubuntu Linux  Using CodeWeavers Crossover 2017 US taxes are due to be filed by midnight on April 18, 2018. It will surprise no one that a lot of people have waited to the last minute to start filing. At 9:30 PM, I got a call from a young relative who needed to do his taxes for the first time ever. He is a Linux enthusiast, and does not have a Windows or Apple/Mac computer. I thought I would try installing HR Block 2017 Tax Software on the Linux side of my laptop. 1) Obtain and install Codeweavers Crossover for Linux This software allows you to run many Windows apps in Linux-- https://www.codeweavers.com/ 2) Download the HR Block Windows tax software package. This year, its available from www.hrblock.com/2017/DELUXEWIN You will need an activation code, which should be provided when you buy the package. The default download location is /home/yourname/Downloads/ The app’s ...

Critter-Resistant Planter Box

“Never a horse that couldn’t be rode, Never a rider that couldn’t be throwed.” –Cowboy Proverb I had an old, neglected planter box in my yard.  It was full of weeds, and the last couple of times I have tried to plant something in it, the voles took out the roots of my plants, and the deer and raccoons took out the tops.   When we had tree cutters take down a dead cedar tree, they cut the trunk into 16 inch logs.  I had an idea about using them to revitalize the planter and discourage the critters from eating everything.  There was no guarantee that this idea would work, or will work for every critter– But, worth a try! Here’s the planter, somewhat before renovation: The borders of the old box were nearly rotted into mulch; The old box was 4 x 8 feet.  It had good soil inside it, although full of weeds and roots.    1) Strain the soil. I laid down a blue tarp and put a piece of metal hardware cloth on top of it.  I shoveled dirt from the plant...

The Big Reset

A lot of people are very upset about global financial conditions these days.   Almost everyone I know is struggling to make ends meet, and failing at it.  Debt levels are high, wages are not keeping up with inflation, our standards of living are going down year by year.  The most likely endpoint of this process, for most of us, seems to be bankruptcy--But bankruptcy is increasingly being prohibited by law.  The only people who seem to be prospering in the current environment are the Very Rich, Government Employees, and Organized Criminals. In the banking crisis in 2008, we bailed out the banks.  It has gotten us nowhere.  The banking industry has continued the same bad practices that got it into trouble in the first place.  We are heading for another crisis of the same kind, but orders of magnitude larger.   The usual endpoint for all this is a giant financial crisis, mass bankruptcy, hyperinflation, chaos, war, bankers and politicians ha...
