Wake Up and See the Martians

20190505-Wake up and See the Martians

J. M. Greer has (again!) put up an insightful analysis of the reaction of the US Bi-Coastal Democrats to the Donald Trump presidency.  He compares it to the five stages of grieving in Elizabeth Kubler-Ross’s work on Death and Dying.

But the best part is at the end.  He names the beneficiaries of our current social arrangement as “Privileged Progressives.”  These are upper-income people who make most of their money from salaries and/or investment income.  Almost every new law or proposal enacted today benefits them, and makes the rest of us a little poorer or takes power and resources away.  Amazing, and spot-on.

It reminds me of the movie, “Mars Attacks.”

Everywhere they go, the Martians shout through megaphones, “We come in peace,” or “We want to be your friends,” but then they blast any humans in reach with ray guns.  There is chaos in the streets, people crying out for help, but the politicians at the top continue to try to make deals with these guys, even after a direct attack on the White House; even after the entire US Senate and Congress are burned to cinders.

The only thing that defeats the Martians is they playing of Country Music.   Only the yodeling of cowboy Slim Whitman delivers victory by causing the Martian brains to explode.

Somehow, whoever made this movie came up with a perfect allegory for the politics of our time.  Privileged Progressives are driving the rest of the nation to destruction.  Maybe the rest of the planet.  They are doing this to maintain their digital fortunes, and doing it at the expense of everyone else.

The Democrats still do not seem to realize that they ran a Martian in the 2016 election.  If they don’t wake up and see the Martians, they risk running another Martian in 2020.  Meanwhile Trump continues to yodel nonsense and make their brains explode.  I hope we can do better in 2020, but I’m not optimistic.
